So, I was talking to Dave.
We were talking about what we were working on and he asked about the Vencume and what is their deal, anyway?
This made me think of an article I'd read and I'd talk to to Dan about it. It's something that showed up after I'd decided to cut the second book into characters.
But really, my short-form is better.
When the Vencume first meet the humans, they're already trying to figure out a way to get some DNA. The big problem is, humans won't meet Vencume without bio-suits or recording it (would you?), so the Vencume have no clean way of collecting any.
The Tzikzik are supposed to collect Human DNA. It's part of why they put Evie in the recovered escape pod. The Vencume find that pretty quickly, don't they? Remember, all the ships are still communicating with each other. The Vencume are testing their Human Tzikzik to see how well they fare against the old form. It's the only reason they allow the attacks to continue.
Meanwhile, the Vencume have told Becca on multiple occasions that she has something they need. It's because Becca is a mom that she can control the human Tzikzik. The Vencume are looking for the weak point in what they think will be a good form for them.
The Vencume had decided long ago to be humans. They are looking to see what weak-spots humans have.
What that also means is that they had no intention at all of keeping the clones. Those were a test for them. Once everything is done and said, they are going to throw those kids away as soon as they can.
This also explains why the Vencume have kept Becca around as long as they have. They have the Human Tzikzik, but they also need a way to control them. Everything else that happens on the ship is the Vencume trying to figure out what makes humans tick.
Really, the entire thing is given away at the breakfast scene. Evie trades technology with Franz for two apples. Evie gives an apple to Judith, who gives it to Max, who uses a tool to cut the apple in half. When Max gives the apple-half back to Judith, he says, "The trade of technology for raw material continues."
The Vencume may seem goofy and benevolent, but they've had an ulterior plan all along.
It's Gordon, the liar, who sees though it and explains it at the end. That's his gift: the ability to deceive.
