I see this a lot, and I think it's just that people don't know how one this is effected by another.
See, sometimes, someone will post an image that's wider than the web-page usually handles. This means the friends page is borked until it's been long enough (or enough people post) to push that image onto a second screen. With things as they are today, it means a couple weeks.
(I'm not naming names because this is something I've mentioned before and I don't want to nag.)
Now, when I say borked, I mean I have to scroll side-to-side to see all of the text of what another friend has posted. This is an unpleasant experience. Sadly, LiveJournal isn't smart enough to automagically re-size your pictures.
There's two really easy ways around this:
First, put it behind a cut! This is the easiest way, if you're not technically inclined, and here's the super-easy FAQ on how to do it.
Second, if you're more adept, resize that image! 600 is a great size for people who don't have huge monitors or are viewing on a laptop. Luckily, there's an FAQ on that as well. Alternately, if you're adding images using the "img src" HTML tag, you can just insert a "width=X" attribute. It's basic HTML and anyone can do it. It even works in Dreamwidth.
So, remember! Your friends might not have the same equipment you do. Five seconds of your time will prevent two weeks of annoyance!
