Ten years ago, this week, I came home to find most of my stuff on the patio. Now, I say most of my stuff, namely my clothes, jewelery, and personal effects (bathroom stuff). It was just in a big pile on the patio. The ex was standing there, demanding my key, and saying that "things are going to change around here."

What I find odd is, he obviously wasn't serious about this. If he'd really wanted to throw me out, he'd also have to put the bed out, and that would leave him with no bed. He'd not touched the books, but that would have been a lot of work. The pots and pans were still in the apartment, as were the dishes, flatware, and glasses. He did put my computer out, but not any of my software or my CDs or DVDs.

It was obviously for show, the same way as when he'd stormed out to move back in with his parents. He obviously meant to come back, or else he would have left his keys and debt card to the shared bank account. I guess making a clean break is hard if you're just throwing a temper-tantrum.

Anyway, I got a new bed, finally. I've had this old one since 1995 and it's been through relationships, et al. It's time for something new.

Look at this sad-ass thing. The way it's designed, the box-springs is supposed to sit on runners on either side, but the ex broke the box, so that didn't work anymore. I eventually got sick of it and, after over three years, got some flat planks to sit in the groove so the box could sit on that.

That new space has come in handy in the past, and I've got a couple of rolling storage bins (one lid pink, one lid blue) that fit under there. I don't need them anymore, so let me know if you're interested.

It's not really as much space as it looked like, but that canopy bed really sucked the space out of that corner.

I do wish those drawers were deeper, but they work fine for what I need. The headboard will probably get some holes drilled in the back to make room for cables, but that will be later.

And, with the box under the mattress, it fits my legs perfectly. I don't have to bend my knees more than 90 degrees to get in bed, which is handy, as I'm going to be epically sore tomorrow.

Actually, tomorrow, I'm going to the Sears outlet store for a new mattress and box-springs. They're having a special this weekend. If there's one thing I got out of my marriage, it was how to stretch a dollar.

Oh, if you know anyone who wants the old bed, a vanity, a stand up mirror, and a curtain-rod, I'm willing to let the whole caboodle go for $200. You won't get the mattress or box-springs, but you don't want them anyway.

I still have the receipt for my bed purchased in '98 for $535.73 at JCPenney. Most of the phone numbers are 800 numbers, but there is one listed with the 817 area code and "Metro" written next to it. The clerk did write 817 as part of my mom's phone number on the hand-written ticket, but I do know that was before Tarrant County also had 682 for an area code, so it's still odd to see. I'm thinking they may have been used to getting a lot of other area codes from customers and was just used to always asking and confirming the area code when writing up the ticket.

Looks like 10-digit dialing in Dallas became required in '99, and 682 was added in Tarrant County in '00. Although, if I remember correctly, all of DFW was required to switch to 10-digit dialing at the same time, because they knew Fort Worth would have to add another area code pretty quickly after Dallas did, and a lot of people were already calling Dallas regardless. Fun tidbit of trivial info.
