If you still had your gills, you wouldn't need oxygen, per se.

You wouldn't need air, per se. However, gills function by filtering dissolved oxygen out of liquid water and (generally) delivering it directly into the circulatory system, almost identical to the task that lungs perform using gaseous air. So, you'd still require oxygen.
