( Buzzo of the Melvins tries to tell a story. )
Let me tell you what really happened.
Pop Will Eat Itself was supposed to open for NIN that night and they didn't. Instead, we got some lame-ass band that sucked.
Now, to say the problem was the floor is a straight-up lie. This was in February. There had been a previous show at the same venue in October and the floor wasn't a problem. As a matter of fact, Marilyn Manson opened for the show that night and the crowd was far more amped than the February show.
For the February show, "Closer" had just been released as a video and single (I'd always skipped it because it sounded too disco). We joked that the crowd was much more "teeny" and twee. This kids did not have fireworks in their back pockets, the way the October crowd did.
So, the floor was not the issue and the crowd wasn't really the issue because no one started throwing anything until the lame-ass band on stage started playing. They even taunted us with "The more shit you throw, the longer we play." So, someone started setting stuff on fire.
Trent did come out and said, "The next act is the Jim Rose Circus and if anything lands on this stage that isn't supposed to be here, we ain't playing." So we cheered, because that meant the lame-ass band was leaving.
And the crowd did not go dead silent. It was a great show.
Once the Melvins left, of course.
